a strike preparation camp

8 - 18 december 2014

Ten days of meetings and reflections on the idea of strike, in the week of the general strike.

Is the strike an action or the interruption of an action? What do we produce when we stop to produce?

Well beyond the notion of performing arts, performance can perhaps simply be thought of as any act that can modify the coordinates of the given, an act that begins with the refusal to stay in one’s proper place, to go along with the normal flow of things. “Circulate”, we hear so often, “there’s nothing to see here”, which basically means: there is nothing to be done. Perhaps performance can be thought of as a way of breaking the circularity that drives the overhanging nihilistic narratives of incapacity and impossibility. If we imagine reality to be a surface, an texture interwoven of various times, spaces, gestures, words and objects, made of endless inclinations that determine movements and trajectories within it, then the proper task of performance is perhaps that of constructing the movements that can refigure the surface, releasing unimagined lines of flight,  opening up gaps between the permitted and the possible. In a time of strikes, Aleppo opens for ten days a Strike preparation camp: ten days of workshops, encounters, screenings, readings on the power of interruptions.

All activities are in English, when not differently indicated.

All encounters are open and free, except for the two screenings of Ariella Azoulay taking place in Cinéma Galerie. Beside these two screenings, all activities take take place in 50, Rue de l'Ecuyer // Schildknaapstraat 50.

The workshop of Erdem Gündüz is open and free, please send an email to hello@aleppo.eu
